Duncan Wells is the voice behind many well known Television and Radio advertising campaigns from Nescafe to Ariel Automatic, Renault Cars to the Daily Mail. As well as campaigns recorded from his ISDN studio direct to studios around the world.
Duncan Wells is also a Royal Yacthing Association Instructor and has his own sailing school Westview Sailing. This is a feeble attempt to try and defray the enormous costs of owning a treasured sailing boat, Dorothy Lee - a Hallberg Rassy 352.
Now Duncan is offering:
JUST A SHARP SCRATCH
an after dinner and motivational talk about how you survive a life threatening experience, how you come to terms with the new 'you' and how you get your life back both in terms of family and work. It's funny, it's moving, it's unique.
To look at Duncan you would never know but in April 2006 he was shot by a faulty collision warning flare while demonstrating its deployment for a film on Navigation and Safety. Duncan spent 9 months in hospital, 4 months in ITU, the first 6 weeks of which he was in a coma. He had 20 laperotomies, 5 Plastics operations, 1 tracheostomy and 1 skin graft. He lost his spleen, all bar 7 inches of large bowel, some of his small bowel and a section of pancreas. And he gained a stoma. The head of ITU said later "I think it is virtually unprecedented. Certainly in my 25 years in clinical intensive care practice I've never seen anybody survive the magnitude of both the initial injury and all the following complications." But survive he did.
And he went on to raise over £50,000 for a ventilator fund for Wexham Park Hospital. It was his wife Sally's idea to buy the hospital a ventilator as a way of saying 'thank you'. Tremendous support was received from friends and work colleagues throughout the world.
His youngest daughter's school Maltman's Green pledged the proceeds from their Summer Ball - and would Duncan like to be the MC and would he like to run the auction and would he like to donate a weekend on his boat as one of the lots? Well of course. Duncan was going to be singing for his supper.
Then the Chiltern Shakespeare Company offered the proceeds from their staging of A Midsummer Night's Dream and would Duncan like to put on an evening with some of his professional friends ? And so was born A Breath Of Fresh Air starring Lesley Joseph, Geoffrey Palmer, Sara Kestleman, Dean Chisnall, a host of other stars and of course, Duncan - all brought together and directed by Michael Vivien. And then the director of A Midsummer Night's Dream asked Duncan to play the part of Theseus - Duke of Athens. Having temporarily mislaid the 'no' word that weeks he said 'yes'.
All of which formed a crucial part of Duncan's rehabilitation. Added to which the fund went way over its original target for one ventilator. In the end the hospital was able to buy not just the 1 fixed Draeger Evita XL ventilator but 3 transportable Oxylog 3000's as well which means that Wexham Park ITU can offer a higher level of patient care, as ventilator patients can now be taken round the hospital for various scans, x rays and treatments which wasn't possible before.
